Lee is a staunch supporter of PETA as well as animal rights. Lee has written Terry Prather in protest of Tilikum's treatment in the year 2010. Lee believed that the animal was due to be released, and he stated that SeaWorld will not permit it to happen since Tilikum is their primary donor of sperm. Lee expressed his displeasure at SeaWorld's incompetence and strange methods to obtain Tilikum fertile. Lee said he was trying to stop tragedies such as trainers dying due to this was caused by the whales' inability to be kept in captivity.
